Transformer AMPacity
Is your HVACR system losing a transformer on a fairly regular basis, without finding a short in your system? One Thing a good tech should always know about is, calculating the total transformer ampacity (so called running, or full load amps).
Transformers are electrical devices consisting of two or more coils of wire used to transfer electrical energy by means of a changing magnetic field.
If the transformer runs hot for extended periods of time, then it will degrade the winding insulation varnish and eventually burn up. Transformers when properly loaded will only run at a warm to the touch temperature, not hot to the touch temperature.
Knowing how to calculate the full load ampacity of a transformer is a very important calculation to have in your bag of tricks as a hvac service technician. Here you will see how to calculate the transformer full load amps. The full load ampacity describes how many amps the transformer is designed to handle.
This is important because it helps determine what size transformer is needed to hand a particular load and keeps the transformer from running hot, which will cause the transformer to burn up.
To determine the proper running amps for a control transformer, you simply divide the transformer VA rating by the secondary voltage rating. EX: 40 V.A. rating divided by secondary volts(24 volts)= 1.67 amps times a de-rate factor of .80% = 1.33 amps maximum full load running amps. Never run the transformer at maximum calculated full load amps, it will run hot and eventually fail.
