Black History Month takes place between February 1st and March 1st every year. It’s a time to celebrate and observe the accomplishments, stories, and the history of the African American community within our nation. It was created in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the previously week-long celebration to a full month in an effort to continuously “honor the accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
We asked our employees what Black History Month means to them, and asked what events in history inspire them.
Ebony Green, Senior Recruiter: Black History Month is a celebration of resilience, strength, and the rich contributions that Black individuals have made throughout history. It’s an opportunity to reflect on our shared journey and highlight the achievements that have shaped our society. The Civil Rights Movement has been a profound influence, showing the power of unity and advocacy for justice.
Sonya Haynes, Senior Accountant: Black History Month is a celebration of where we come from and how we have contributed to society. The work of Martin Luther King Jr. helped shape my life by inspiring me to give back by servicing others in need no matter their background.
Darius Lucas, System and Support Analyst: Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on our ancestors and the voices who led the way as well as what’s happening today. It’s about telling the story of things that don’t always get talked about. The Civil Rights Movement inspires me.
Kevin Fonville, Account Executive: Black History Month is a time to reflect on achievements and accomplishments that for so long were rarely spoken of in history books and early education. My great uncle, Horace, graduated from seminary school with Dr. King. Horace passed away several years ago in his 90’s but he is mentioned in a book called Parting the Waters: America in the King Years 1954-63 which is about Dr. King’s legacy.
Dr. King is pictured here in the center of the front row, while Kevin’s great uncle, Horace, can be seen in the back left.
Do you have any sentimental moments growing up or from your family’s history that you’d like to share with us?
Ebony Green, Senior Recruiter: The resilience of my ancestors is a source of deep inspiration. Family gatherings where stories are shared and traditions are passed down hold a special place in my heart, connecting me to my roots.
Sonya Haynes, Senior Accountant: My most sentimental moments are going to church on Sunday and my entire family meeting afterwards at my grandparents’ home for Sunday dinner. Holidays with my family have always been sentimental as our parents spoke of their childhood memories.
Darius Lucas, System and Support Analyst: I coach football and help out my community year round. Something interesting about my family is that my grandmother’s house was built by all her sons and grandsons.
Kevin Fonville, Account Executive: Another fun fact about my family’s history is that my mother went to college and is friends with Joylette Goble, who’s mother is Katherine Johnson from the movie Hidden Figures.
(Katherine is pictured in the bottom center of the graphic at the top of this page.)
